After over a month of telecommuting and providing virtual services to clients, the Brooklyn WeCARE Employment Team felt that it was time to explore new, creative ways towards exposing clients to job opportunities. In May, the team hosted two virtual job fairs that introduced clients to vacant job opportunities, provided information on local resources, and gave them a chance to engage in various job readiness exercises.

On May 1, the team established six breakout rooms using the Zoom Video Conferencing Platform and welcomed 29 WeCARE clients to their first virtual job fair. Clients were virtually escorted between breakout rooms with WeCARE staff assigned to each of them. Clients spent 20-30 minutes with the room’s designated lead where they received information on open employment opportunities, engaged in practice exercises, and gained insight into various community resources available to them.

Business services coordinators took the lead in two rooms by sharing information on open job orders they were actively working to fill with WeCARE clients. In another set of rooms, recruiters helped clients complete job applications, sharpen their interview techniques, and develop optimal responses to tough interview questions.

Employment coaches managed another breakout room where they shared information on housing resources, local food banks, shelters, free access to phones, medical and dental resources, and other essential services. The event received such positive feedback from clients and staff that the Brooklyn WeCARE staff organized another virtual event that took place on May 15. Over 33 clients attended the event.

In the two weeks since the events were held, one client has already been hired as a line cook, and two clients have job offers pending. Clients were thrilled to learn about employment opportunities from maintenance to home health aide positions. Over 15 clients received referrals, and the team is excited about hosting a third event where they plan to have employers in attendance.

The team understands that the work they are doing is making a huge difference for clients impacted by COVID-19. They continue to exemplify LEGACY in the work they do each day.
